Sailors 1 - 3 Grilled

A brilliantly sunny day had enticed a crowd of 86244 to Woodside Park. Brás Afonso Xavier was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Bernard Leskovjan and Heiko 'Sexy' Sachsen-Paule. The weather was sunny, which meant perfect conditions for technical players in both teams. However, it was also quite warm, which meant quick or physically strong players were drained faster and couldn't play their best game. The match took place on neutral ground. The following players had been chosen by Sailors: Galarreta - Lampert, Mian, Zetti, Punyachartrat - Rakčević, Sires, Najib, Bolko, Guang Soon - Riolfatti.

The following players took the field for Grilled: Dob - Webb, Panigrahi - 敬龙 (Jinglong), ter Berg, Mohammad Harun, Kamel, Dong Chu - Xin Seng, Mudaliar, Parvathaneni.

Marina Sailors fielded a 4-5-1 lineup. For Grilled Birds, the formation of choice was 2-5-3. Grilled used their divine (+7) (27) ability to concentrate their attacks in the middle of the pitch, rather than on the wings. After 12 minutes, Grilled's Heng Dong Chu made his way through the middle and nonchalantly placed the ball out of the keeper's reach, putting the visitors up 0 - 1. The referee showed Sailors's Narin Mian the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. 15 minutes into the match, Grilled's Kalki Parvathaneni demonstrated his famed speed as he raced past his marker and passed the ball to Moey Xin Seng who chipped it in for 0 - 2. Moey Xin Seng was, after 20 minutes, almost able to extend the visitors' lead with a well placed diving header after the ball had looped into the centre, but the home side's keeper Ramón Galarreta made the save. Kalki Parvathaneni came close to extending the visitors' lead when he found himself completely unmarked in front of the goal after a pass through the middle. He tried to lift the ball over Ramón Galarreta but overcooked it and hit the bar instead. 33 minutes into the match, Moey Xin Seng came through the middle and almost added to his team's lead, but the shot went wide. A defender managed to keep the ball from crossing the goal-line after a curling shot coming in from the right from Moey Xin Seng after 37 minutes, and prevented Grilled from going up another goal. With 38 minutes gone, a long pass from the defence of Sailors resulted in a counterattack that set Kwan Guang Soon free through the middle, but the keeper made a spectacular diving save. The teams went for the halftime break at 0 - 2. Grilled claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 56 percent.

Grilled players heard their coach's words ringing in their ears and steered their wing attacks to the middle instead. With 53 minutes played, Kalki Parvathaneni nearly put the visitors another one up as he broke through in the middle and fired from just outside the box, but his shot passed just over the bar. It was obvious that team Grilled had instructions to attack in the middle instead of on the wings. Bhavya Panigrahi received a delicate pass through the home side's central defence after 67 minutes, and chipped it past the flailing keeper to score making it 0 - 3. The Grilled fans went wild, whilst the home fans started to think about leaving early. The visitors nearly scored again after 76 minutes, but a superb save by Ramón Galarreta kept 吴 (Wu) 敬龙 (Jinglong)'s free kick out of the net. Sailors supporters cheered as good work down the right got the ball to Giorgio Riolfatti who reduced the visitors' lead after 78 minutes to 1 - 3. The home crowd cheered when, after 84 minutes, Kalle ter Berg's charge up the middle resulted in the keeper making one of his best saves of the day. Kristian Rakčević went down after twisting his right ankle after 86 minutes, and had to leave the pitch. The player that took his place was Joram Extra. As Kristian Rakčević left the field, the coach signaled to Puchong Punyachartrat to be the new set pieces taker. The referee decided to let play continue for an additional 2 minutes beyond the regular 90 minutes. The match ends 1 - 3. Grilled had most of the ball, with 57 percent of possession.

Sailors's best player was Giorgio Riolfatti. On the other hand, Joram Extra's play was disheartening. Grilled's top performer was clearly Moey Xin Seng. Bhavya Panigrahi was a disappointment, however.
