Tampines 1 - 5 Grilled

73444 punters turned up at Big Nest Arena Singapore, and despite threatening clouds on the horizon, no rain came. Tomas Bretschneider was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Lars Månkvist and Thorsten Buchbauer. The match took place on neutral ground. The following players had been chosen by Tampines: Yeng Da - Feng Jie, Kamarul, Tian Su, Yun Siong - Ahmad, Nath, Zahid Rida, Eng Leng, Brown - Zuhairi.

Grilled fielded: Dob - Jeftić, Webb - Xin Lee, ter Berg, Mohammad Harun, Kamel, Ze Han - Xin Seng, Mudaliar, Parvathaneni.

Tampines Phoenix F.C. started the game in a 4-5-1 formation, whereas Grilled Birds lined up in a 2-5-3 formation. It was obvious that Tampines were using their formidable (9) pressing skill as their primary tactic. Grilled used their divine (+8) (28) ability to concentrate their attacks in the middle of the pitch, rather than on the wings. With 9 minutes played, the home side managed to get a 1 - 0 lead as Wu Feng Jie flipped the ball in after a cross from the right. Mateja Jeftić levelled the score for Grilled, making it 1 - 1 on a free kick that went in by way of the right post. The pressing tactics used by Tampines were successful as the ball remained close to the half way line at all times. Having taken a hard knock between his legs, Mateja Jeftić limped off the pitch in a reduced state of dignity. He could not continue, managing only 33 minutes for his team this day. This gave Bhavya Panigrahi a chance to take to the field instead. Mateja Jeftić was coming off, and had placed his last free kick for the day. That meant that Bhavya Panigrahi got the chance to showcase his dead ball skills. Grilled's Moey Xin Seng gave the visitors a 1 - 2 lead after 34 minutes with a superb strike from the right. After 36 minutes a combination in the middle resulted in a through ball for Kalle ter Berg who increased Grilled's lead to 1 - 3. The teams went for the halftime break at 1 - 3. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Grilled, with 70 percent of the ball.

60 minutes into the match, the referee signalled for a Grilled substitution. Bernie Egan came on for Chu Xin Lee. 69 minutes into the game, Tampines wanted to bring some new energy to their game. Yang Yeng Da gave Tarun Prasad a quick hug as he left the field. Tampines's ability to press all over the field frequently paid dividends. As the 74 minute mark approached, the Tampines coach decided it was time for a substitution. Ahmad Zuhairi reluctantly made way for Li Guang Wan on the pitch. Tampines's Lee Tian Su got himself booked for a foul. Kalki Parvathaneni was in no condition to play on. He left the field limping after 83 minutes, with his right thigh bandaged. The replacement for the injured player was 吴 (Wu) 敬龙 (Jinglong). 84 minutes into the game, Grilled were awarded a penalty and Bhavya Panigrahi was able to increase the visitors' lead to 1 - 4 rolling the ball in by the right post. 86 minutes into the match, Vikram Mudaliar came through the middle and almost added to his team's lead, but the shot went wide. After 87 minutes, an incisive pass through the middle gave Vikram Mudaliar a chance to increase the lead for Grilled, and he did not disappoint. The score was then 1 - 5. The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave Bhavya Panigrahi from Grilled a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 88 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! Tampines's Wu Feng Jie had to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines, after twisting his hand with 89 minutes on the clock. The coach had his head in his hands, as he realised he could not send a replacement onto the pitch. The team had to continue a man short. It was announced by the referee that he estimated stoppage time to be around 3 minutes. This meant there could still be an extra attack or two left in the match! The home crowd cheered when, after 89 minutes, Vikram Mudaliar's charge up the middle resulted in the keeper making one of his best saves of the day. The match ends 1 - 5. Grilled had most of the ball, with 74 percent of possession.

Imaduddin Ahmad performed admirably for Tampines. Tarun Prasad was a disappointment, however. Grilled's best player was Moey Xin Seng. However, Chan Ze Han made a disastrous appearance.
