The teams had chosen different formations for the match. The home team, ValenciaCity, went for a 5-3-2, while Grilled Birds has decided to play a 2-5-3 lineup. For their match strategy, ValenciaCity had decided to use their brilliant (11) ability to counter-attack whenever possible. The visiting
Chu Xin Lee was booed thoroughly by the home crowd 2 minutes into the game, after he broke through the middle and scored, resulting in the visitors taking the lead. 0 - 1 was the score. A defender managed to keep the ball from crossing the goal-line after a curling shot from the right by
Bernie Egan beat the keeper with 12 minutes played, preventing Grilled from going up another goal. After 34 minutes, there was a bit of a mixup on the field as ValenciaCity found themselves out of position and their organization level dropped to inadequate (5). After 35 minutes, Grilled sent a free kick in high over the penalty box. In what looked like a well-rehearsed move, the ball was headed backwards and reached
Chu Xin Lee, who had plenty of time to shoot and score - 0 - 2.
Julio Ernesto Leguizamón got a fingertip on
Salah Kamel's shot from the left 36 minutes in, and managed to keep the visitors from going up another goal. A thrilling play through the middle after 44 minutes gave Grilled's
Bhavya Panigrahi a chance to increase the lead, and he happily obliged. The score was then 0 - 3. The teams went for the halftime break at 0 - 3. Looks like Nate Silver was right again - his prediction that Grilled would have 81 percent possession in this half was spot on!
ValenciaCity's coach went over the strategy again during the break, and after that his players had solid (7) organization. 50 minutes into the match, the visitors put themselves ahead 0 - 4 as
Chan Ze Han finished off an attack from the left with a spectacular bicycle kick. As the 55 minute mark approached, the ValenciaCity manager decided it was time for a substitution.
Achille Steger reluctantly made way for
Ricardo Gomes Lourenço. With the clock showing 60 minutes, the fourth official held up the substitution board.
Gwendal Arnaud looked to see that it was his number in red, so he made his way over to the sideline and swapped out for
Adin Kantić, though he would have liked to continue. After 65 minutes, the ValenciaCity coach wanted to see a new face on the field, waving
Adolphus Bird-Pelletier off.
Sulev Kikas took his place. Grilled's
Chu Xin Lee received a ball slotted perfectly through the home side's central defense after 66 minutes, and chipped it past the helpless keeper to increase the lead to 0 - 5. The away fans won't regret traveling for this one! He'd already scored two, and with the third,
Chu Xin Lee had a hattrick! 70 minutes into the game, Grilled wanted to bring some new energy to their game.
Bhavya Panigrahi gave
Gilbert Webb a quick hug as he left the field. 71 minutes in, ValenciaCity appeared unsure on how to play and their organization was only poor (3). Some fine one-twos on the left led to a Grilled goal with 73 minutes gone, making it 0 - 6.
Bernie Egan was noted down as the scorer. After 74 minutes
Bernie Egan made a speedy advance and dropped the ball to
Kalki Parvathaneni who blasted it past the keeper. The score was now 0 - 7. Grilled's
Kalle ter Berg made it through the home team's defense on the right hand side 75 minutes into the match. After rounding the keeper, he only had to place the ball in the unguarded net when a defender slid in and cleared the ball off the line.
Bernie Egan was, after 77 minutes, almost able to extend the visitors' lead with a well placed diving header after the ball had looped into the center, but the home side's keeper
Julio Ernesto Leguizamón made the save. 80 minutes into the match, the referee signaled for a Grilled substitution.
Heng Dong Chu came on for
吴 (Wu) 敬龙 (Jinglong). The referee decided to let play continue for an additional 2 beyond the regular 90 minutes. The match ends 0 - 7. Grilled did a good job holding on to the ball, with 85 percent of possession. We'll be back after these interminable commercial messages.
Most important ValenciaCity player was
Constantin Jornod. Speaking of stinking up the place,
Sulev Kikas sure smelled like the bottom of Batman's shoe after a night of crimefighting in Gotham.
Moey Xin Seng performed admirably for Grilled. I can't remember
Chu Xin Lee ever having a worse night than he just had.
