Grilled 2 - 3 Pony

Due to an all-day shower, the spectators got to see a match on a pitch-turned-bog. The wet pitch made it difficult for technical or quick players to stand out. For once, the players relying on physical strength gained the upper hand. The following players took the field: Dob - Webb, Panigrahi - Xin Seng, Mohammad Harun, Muthyala, Kamel, ter Berg - Ze Han, Mudaliar, Egan.

They fielded: Cavallaro - Zorov, Silling, Dunaj, Bleecke - Dincă, Gregersen, Szabat, Azzolini - Guerrero, Hordejuk.

Grilled Birds started the game in a 2-5-3 formation, whereas Pony Bravo lined up in a 4-4-2. Grilled went for a narrow approach, using their divine (+5) ability to focus their attacks down the middle. Central attacks were the recipe of the day for Grilled, and they were successfully passing the ball from the wing into the middle at the behest of their coach. Many thought Vikram Mudaliar ought to have been awarded a penalty 15 minutes into the match, as he went down trying to beat Eugenio Cavallaro after an attack through the middle gave him the one-on-one opportunity. Neeraj Muthyala's name was chanted throughout the stadium after his goal in minute 21 following a run up the middle gave Grilled the 1 - 0 lead. The home side's Moey Xin Seng came close to extending the lead after 33 minutes. His shot came in from the right but Eugenio Cavallaro managed to push it wide with his fingertips. Julio Guerrero was in the clear after breaking through the offside trap following a Pony counter-attack from the left with 34 minutes played. His neat finish made the score 1 - 1. After 39 minutes, Pony's Julio Guerrero made his way through the middle and nonchalantly placed the ball out of the keeper's reach, putting the visitors up 1 - 2. 41 minutes into the game, Bernie Egan came close to leveling the score with a dangerous shot from the center of the area that went just over the bar. Moey Xin Seng made a superb effort after 42 minutes after a long ball through the middle, but one of the visitors' defenders got a foot in at the last second to preserve the away lead. The teams went for the halftime break at 1 - 2. Looks like Nate Silver was right again - his prediction that Grilled would have 58 percent possession in this half was spot on!

Pony's Julio Guerrero received a ball slotted perfectly through the home side's central defense after 63 minutes, and chipped it past the helpless keeper to increase the lead to 1 - 3. The away fans won't regret traveling for this one! At that, Julio Guerrero was noted down for a hattrick! Grilled's Neeraj Muthyala sliced towards the middle after 64 minutes, receiving a sensational pass and carving through the visiting team's central defense, putting the goal away to make it 2 - 3. With the match clock reading 75 minutes, the inexperienced Pony team fell into disarray. With the clock showing 85 minutes, the fourth official held up the substitution board. Kalle ter Berg looked to see that it was his number in red, so he made his way over to the sideline and swapped out for Heng Dong Chu, though he would have liked to continue. As the match nears its end, the referee deemed it appropriate to add 2 minutes as stoppage time. After 89 minutes, Moey Xin Seng got through on the right and was very close to equalizing for the home side, but he didn't get the shot right and it rolled just past the far post. After more pushing and shoving than a pack of helicopter moms trying to get the last appointment for their snowflakes to see the Easter Bunny, Grilled's Bhavya Panigrahi finally got himself booked for a foul. The match ends 2 - 3. Grilled set the tempo, maintaining 59 percent of possession.

Grilled's best player was Chan Ze Han. Good thing Bhavya Panigrahi isn't a horse, because he'd surely be sent to the glue factory after that performance. Most important Pony player was Julio Guerrero. Speaking of stinking up the place, Geurt Bleecke sure smelled like the bottom of Batman's shoe after a night of crimefighting in Gotham.
