The teams had chosen different formations for the match. Home team Singapore Big Dogs went for 3-5-2 while Grilled Birds has decided to play a 2-5-3 lineup. The home side put themselves ahead 1 - 0 after 16 minutes courtesy of a breakthrough from
Mahesh Murthy, who scored with a stunning volley following a cross from the right wing. Cheers filled the stadium as
Hudson Matsumoto broke through the visitors' central defence to put away the ball to increase the lead to 2 - 0 to Singapore. A magnificent combination in the middle resulted in Singapore's
Alistair Xiao increasing the lead to 3 - 0.
Wicaksana Mabenda made a brilliant save 20 minutes into the match, blocking a rocket of a shot from
Kalki Parvathaneni on the right hand side. Halftime score was 3 - 0. Grilled enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 51 percent of possession.
54 minutes into the match, the visitors' central line of defence had to look on as
Vinod Modi broke through, making the score 4 - 0 for Singapore. After 58 minutes
Chan Ze Han seized on an opportunistic attack from the right, and scored for Grilled making it 4 - 1. The visitors got a chance to pull one back after 59 minutes, as the home defence went to sleep, leaving
Chan Ze Han completely unmarked in the middle. His strike was pathetic though, and dribbled into the arms of the home side's keeper. As the 60 minute mark approached, the Grilled coach decided it was time for a substitution.
Moey Xin Seng reluctantly made way for
Islom Davlatov on the pitch. After 60 minutes,
Hudson Matsumoto put Singapore ahead 5 - 1 when he rose to head in a cross from the right wing. Singapore put themselves up 6 - 1 when
Joey Ling broke through on the right, leaving the entire defence trailing in his wake. After 80 minutes, the Grilled coach wanted to see a new face on the pitch, waving
Bernie Egan off the field.
Vikram Mudaliar took his place.
Gilbert Webb would have preferred to play on, but his coach decided otherwise.
Hong Trung Qu entered the game for Grilled as the match clock showed 89 minutes. As the match nears its end, the referee has deemed it appropriate to add 2 minutes as stoppage time. Grilled reduced the lead after 89 minutes to 6 - 2 as
Cyril Knzler easily chipped the ball past the home side's keeper after a dazzling play from the right. The match ends 6 - 2. Grilled claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 52 percent.
Singapore's top performer was clearly
Deng Yew Leong.
Dietrich Venzin turned in a dismal performance, however. Grilled's best player was
Kalki Parvathaneni.
Hong Trung Qu was a disappointment, however.
