Sailors 1 - 3 Grilled
The 72462 fans in attendance at
Woodside Park were roasting in the hot sun.
Paulo Coelho was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Constantin Pârvu and
Frederik Martinussen. The intense heat made it hard for players relying on strength or speed to shine. On the other hand, it provided perfect conditions for the more technical players. The match took place on neutral ground. The following players took the field:
Galarreta -
Harrison,
Lampert,
Punyachartrat -
Manohar,
Chun,
Bolko,
Tărâţă,
Thomas -
Guang Yew,
Dolinskiy.
Lineup:
Dob -
Webb,
Panigrahi -
Davlatov,
Mudaliar,
Ze Han,
Xin Seng,
Muthyala -
Mohammad Harun,
Egan,
Parvathaneni.
It was to be a contest between two different football philosophies, since the home team started the game with a 3-5-2 formation while the visitors instead opted for 2-5-3. Grilled mostly ignored the flanks in favour of their ability to attack in the middle, taking advantage of their divine (+4) level with that tactic. After 8 minutes, Grilled put themselves up 0 - 1, as
Islom Davlatov finished off a strike from the left with a real cannonball of a shot. Grilled's opponents know to be wary of
Kalki Parvathaneni's speed, but it made little difference as he flew past the defence 11 minutes into the game. Only the keeper could stop him - and he did with a perfectly timed dive!
Prabhu Manohar slowly got up on his feet, clutching his right thigh, but eventually signalled that he was ready to play on. Grilled's
Vikram Mudaliar made it through the home team's defence on the right hand side 28 minutes into the match. After rounding the keeper, he only had to place the ball in the unguarded goal when a defender slid in and cleared the ball off the line. The home crowd cheered when, after 29 minutes,
Bernie Egan's charge up the middle resulted in the keeper making one of his best saves of the day. Sailors's
Prabhu Manohar made a successful breakthrough on the left after 32 minutes and should have levelled the score, but instead he clipped it over the bar. 0 - 1 was the halftime score. Possession in this half belonged to Grilled, who controlled the ball 58 percent of the time.
Islom Davlatov would have preferred to play on, but his coach decided otherwise.
Chu Xin Lee entered the game for Grilled as the match clock showed 46 minutes. Had it not been for one of the home defenders,
Bhavya Panigrahi would have put Grilled up another goal 47 minutes into the match with his audacious lob from the right wing. The crowd roared in delight as
Prabhu Manohar finished off a spectacular series of passes through the middle to even the score for Sailors 58 minutes into the match. 1 - 1.
Malcolm Chun couldn't do anything to stop the technically gifted
Chan Ze Han as he dodged past on his way to scoring a wonderful goal for Grilled - 1 - 2! After 76 minutes a combination in the middle resulted in a through ball for
Moey Xin Seng who increased Grilled's lead to 1 - 3. After 82 minutes of game time,
Bilal Mohammad Harun had an excellent opportunity to add to the visitors' lead, clipping a volley hooked in from the right, but
Ramón Galarreta was in the right place and tipped the ball over for a corner. The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave
Kalki Parvathaneni from Grilled a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 83 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! With 84 minutes played,
Vikram Mudaliar nearly put the visitors another one up as he broke through in the middle and fired from just outside the box, but his shot passed just over the bar. As the 88 minute mark approached, the Grilled coach decided it was time for a substitution.
Neeraj Muthyala reluctantly made way for
Heng Dong Chu on the pitch. The Grilled players could smell victory in the air.
Chu Xin Lee wasn't in a hurry to leave the field as he was substituted for
Cyril Künzler after 88 minutes. The referee decided to let play continue for an additional 2 minutes beyond the regular 90 minutes. As the match clock reached 89 minutes, Grilled's organisation began to suffer due to a lack of experience. The match ends 1 - 3. Grilled had most of the ball, with 58 percent of possession.
Sailors's top performer was clearly
Lam Guang Yew.
Brendon Lampert was a disappointment, however.
Kalki Parvathaneni performed admirably for Grilled.
Bhavya Panigrahi on the other hand, had a terrible day.
