Mohd Safri Called Up
There was some wonderful news at the end of an indifferent campaign for Grilled favourite
Mohd Safri bin Mohd Kassim, who received a call from the Hattrick Football Association of Singapore, informing him that he had been included in the 24-man national squad aged 22 years and 95 days.
Singapore had recently done well to reach the third round of the Hattrick World Cup held in Trinidad & Tobago, where they were eliminated after narrow defeats to Liechtenstein and Serbia; the highlight was a very credible 1-1 draw against six-time world champions Sweden, thanks to a fearless header from Tele Fone FC's Muhd Anuar bin Senin, a player Mohd Safri has often been compared with.
As of today, Mohd Safri is the youngest in a side consisting largely of other familiar faces from the national U-20 setup, such as Blackburn Rovers Fan's winger Poh Wai Ying, Robbie Football Club's Lei Chunzhuo and Heaven Skys' Mohd Rosedy bin Mohd Nor, not to mention league rivals in the same age-group such as Mohd Aiman Wong bin Kassim, Safri bin Mustapa and Mazlan bin Meri.
While Mohd Safri harbours no illusions of becoming a national regular just yet, he does dream of being picked for Friday's friendly against Slovensko in the Czech Republic. "That would be some huge encouragement for me!" he confirmed.
