Springboks 7 - 4 Grilled

Clouds darkened the skies at Love Street Stadium as 21816 spectators turned up for the match. Vojin Sredojević was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Stefan Pieters and Gianantonio Pontanari. The match took place on neutral ground. The following players took the field for Springboks: Savolainen - Yeng Aik, Rysgaard, Goldhafer - Abrahams, Lyhstål, Velankar, Mitchodjehoun - 儒贤 (Ruxian), Leu, Örnman.

Grilled fielded: Germanakos - Thach, 其材 (Qicai) - Reddy, Chitre, Keng Chuan, An Keng, Parada - Kwang Tse, Khairul, Teck Fu.

Sentoza Springboks started the game in a 3-4-3 formation, whereas Grilled Birds lined up in a 2-5-3 formation. Grilled used their divine (+8) (28) ability to concentrate their attacks in the middle of the pitch, rather than on the wings. 高 (Gao) 儒贤 (Ruxian) gave Springboks the lead as he successfully challenged the guests' central defenders, then slotted the ball into the bottom corner, giving the keeper no chance. 1 - 0 Grilled had a good opportunity to attack on the wing, but remembered their instructions to go for middle attacks. Grilled tied it all up, 34 minutes in, after a spectacular goal by Brian 'Was Born' Reddy, who miraculously broke through the home side's central defence, making it 1 - 1. Grilled took the lead 38 minutes into the game, making the score 1 - 2 after some elegant movement down the middle. Mohd Marzuki Khairul was the scorer. Unhappy with the result so far in the game, the Springboks manager used a brief break in play after 39 minutes to give the players new directives. After 39 minutes, Springboks used a short break in the game to take new instructions from their coach. The home crowd cheered when, after 40 minutes, Mohd Marzuki Khairul's charge up the middle resulted in the keeper making one of his best saves of the day. Heinrich Goldhafer knocked one home from a counterattack down the right wing, making the score 2 - 2 after 41 minutes. After 43 minutes, following yet another great corner, Chia Kwang Tse's flick on at the near post reached Aw Keng Chuan, who was just wide with his snapshot - the ball went out for a goal kick. Aw Keng Chuan came close to putting the visiting team one up 44 minutes into the match, following a solo raid down the middle, but Leo Savolainen managed to tip the ball to a corner. Halftime score was 2 - 2. Possession in this half belonged to Grilled, who controlled the ball 59 percent of the time.

As the clock reached 46 minutes, Grilled decided to regroup. Gandhik Chitre gave Hwang Teck Fu a little pat on the back as they changed positions on the pitch. A mistake by the home side's central defence after 47 minutes allowed Gandhik Chitre to score for Grilled. The scoreboard now read 2 - 3. With a shot curled in from just outside the middle of the penalty area after 59 minutes played, Joel Örnman of Springboks made the score 3 - 3. Gandhik Chitre had a good opportunity to give Grilled the lead as he charged down the right and struck the ball towards the top corner, but the home team's goalkeeper made the save. 75 minutes into the match, the referee signalled for a Springboks substitution. Sigbert Swärdbeck came on for Heinrich Goldhafer. Sigbert Swärdbeck became the new Springboks captain. After 76 minutes, Grilled's lack of experience resulted in the team's loss of their edge at the end of the game. 77 minutes into the game, Lim An Keng had a great chance to put his team ahead, but his kick from the left went wide. 80 minutes into the game, Springboks wanted to bring some new energy to their game. Chukwunonso Mitchodjehoun gave Niels Meitil a quick hug as he left the field. Mohd Marzuki Khairul would have preferred to play on, but his coach decided otherwise. Gústav Thoroddsen entered the game for Grilled as the match clock showed 89 minutes. The players were tired, but when the referee announced that there would be 1 minute of added time they, nonetheless, welcomed the extra opportunity to make an impact. It was obvious that team Grilled had instructions to attack in the middle instead of on the wings. 89 minutes into the game, Hwang Teck Fu almost gave the visitors the lead, as he clipped a delicate lob over the keeper, but the ball glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. The referee showed Springboks's Sigbert Swärdbeck the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. A slight injury to his left calf muscle meant Gústav Thoroddsen had to leave the match early. It happened after 89 minutes. The replacement for the injured player was Paulino Trindade. After the regular 91 minutes, the agony of extra time followed. Grilled had most of the ball, with 61 percent of possession.

As the 91 minute mark approached, the Springboks coach decided it was time for a substitution. 高 (Gao) 儒贤 (Ruxian) reluctantly made way for Gundu Prabhu on the pitch. A review of the gameplan helped Grilled get back to a excellent (8) organisation when the referee blew his whistle again. Central attacks were the recipe of the day for Grilled, as they moved the ball from the wings to the middle with startling regularity. Down the middle came Federico Parada, making a fantastic play that nearly had Grilled take the lead after 99 minutes, but Leo Savolainen preserved the tie. Gandhik Chitre had a good try after 104 minutes, coming in on a fine move from the left, but the ball went wide. Still tied after extra time, the crowd was buzzing as the teams prepared for a penalty shoot-out to determine the winner.

Springboks's Freddie Abrahams kept his cool as he faced down Dimitris Germanakos. His composure paid off as he scored easily for 4 - 3. Grilled's Gandhik Chitre drove the ball hard to the corner but couldn't get it past the outstretched arm of Leo Savolainen. The score remains 4 - 3. Springboks's Eskild Rysgaard coolly put the ball past Dimitris Germanakos. 5 - 3. Grilled's Hwang Teck Fu showed he has nerves of steel when it comes to penalties, easily changing the score to 5 - 4. Springboks's Leo Savolainen made no mistake. Dimitris Germanakos didn't have a chance. 6 - 4. Grilled's Paulino Trindade didn't hesitate but Leo Savolainen managed the save, resulting in an unchanged 6 - 4 score. Springboks's Choong Yeng Aik was relaxed as he smoothly put the ball in the net. 7 - 4! The match ends 7 - 4. Most important Springboks player was Gundu Prabhu. Leo Savolainen on the other hand, had a terrible day. Grilled's top performer was clearly Chia Kwang Tse. Chad Thach turned in a dismal performance, however.
