No Worse, Surely?
It was the darkest season for the Grilled clubs in a long while, with the Birds dumped out of the second division in last place having won just a single league match for the season, the Buns stagnant and International finishing in the bottom half of their table, despite their stars supposedly being in their prime.
One would surely understand if the Birds fans had collectively decided to consign the memories of the season to the dustbin of history, given that after their obligatory first-round Cup win, a 3-0 over Benfleet Branch 2 in the second round of league fixtures, followed by a 4-0 over Twenty2FC, they would go thirteen matches without victory, claiming an unwanted club record. That club legend turned head coach Tian Yonghang had warned of such, didn't make it any easier to take.
A minor consolation would be that the fans would get to witness a new crop of local lads making good, with Lim An Keng, Chia Kwang Tse, Hwang Teck Fu and Mohd Marzuki Khairul soon joined by Gandhik Chitre in the first team squad. Extra flavour would be added by the antics of wingers Enrique Baena and Paulino Trindade, but there was no hiding that this was just not Division Two quality, the best efforts of Grilled's grand old men notwithstanding.
Grilled Birds would be joined in their rebuild by the Farmer Bunnies, who would end the season with Guan Ming Kum, Ong Li Jin, Lau Keng Kwang and Amirul Jufri Khairil promoted out of their academy. In fact, the Buns' production line from the Rancher Rabbits is if anything chugging along even better than the Birds, with a host of defensive tyros straining to join their brethen in the big time.
This would see Djoko Tambusai and Nguyễn Văn Chương depart towards the end of the season, with Richard Agyei reportedly also seriously considering a transfer out, to preserve his national team status. Their ambitions for the league title would be dashed by mid-season after getting just one point off only real challengers Dragon Devil's, and a home upset by Brighton UK would leave them hopelessly adrift. The cup offered no respite either, as they were eliminated in the main competition by Dragon Devil's again, and the Ruby Challenger Cup by the venerable Edbe FC.
Grilled International's fate could perhaps be accounted the most disappointing out of the three, surprising as it might be, since they did not have the excuse of a shake-up to fall back upon. A 1-6 opening day embarassment against Rohan would set the tone for the rest of the campaign, and they would eventually have to play Sweden's Trollbrook Balltrollers to preserve their membership in the H.I. Division Four. Gaffer Didi Reidenbach has shown no inclination towards improving his squad, and some observers would describe him as a dead man walking, in terms of actual influence exerted.
