Fears Of Stagnation
Season Sixty-Five brought with it a general sense that the Grilled clubs' development had stalled, although there were scattered bright spots to be found. First off, for the Birds, they again fell short of Changi Genius' sheer consistency at slaying minnows - not that their poor opening day loss helped any. Changi are at least off to the division above, and the less said about their cup campaigns, the better.
All the excitement was very understandably then centered around the incalculable teenage star Chan Ze Han, who exploded into the wider consciousness with an exceptionally mature debut against -Blitz-, scoring into the bargain. The hype has however died down somewhat towards, as Chan has thus far failed to replicate his finishing form. However, in terms of approach play, there remain few better in his age group.
Farmer Bunnies' season could best be described as one of unfulfilled promises, with four straight league wins seeing them lead the pack in the early going. They hit a bump against Golden Jaguars, however, and never quite regained their previously unassailable mien after that.
Some of this doubt was probably self-inflicted, firstly with the Sapphire Challenger Cup splitting the club's focus. But then, few could have questioned head coach Sikong Darong after the Buns thrashed S-League side FC Barca Singapore in the Round of Sixteen. Sadly, Scallop Soccer Team narrowly dumped them in the next round.
A bigger issue was Sikong's insistence on deploying midfield-heavy formations in the second half of the campaign, even when it became extremely obvious that they were not exactly playing to the team's strengths. He has thus far proved immune to criticism, though, with the Buns eventually forced to play a qualifier for their place in the league.
Grilled International's second season was nothing much to write home about as they finished in seventh, as they emphasized possession and not much else. The Busy Bees have at least been feeding a fairly steady stream of talent to the senior squad, with Zaini bin Hj Kaling, Safari bin Hj Jali and Wang Hangxuan, among others, making it to the next level.
