The teams had chosen different formations for the match. The home team, Die Opiumbrigade, went for a 5-5-0, while Grilled Birds has decided to play a 2-5-3 lineup. Opium tried to use the Han Solo approach today, using their mythical (17) skill in Long Shots to try to make the Kessel Run in under 12 parsecs. My oh my, what a goal! The defenders were expecting another pass up the field, but
Bernd Hollerbach passed back to
Andy Brehme instead, who then took a stunning shot from 35 yards. He knew exactly where that one was going, as it bounced in off the crossbar to make it 1 - 0 after 2 minutes. Opium focused on finding shooting opportunities from distance and after 8 minutes
Andy Brehme fired off the big cannon, but the shot went sailing over the cross bar and almost cleared the stands! With 9 minutes played, Grilled's
夏 (Ha) 其材 (Qicai) received a yellow card for challenging a play with his cleats first. Opium's
Klaus Fischer had a good first touch on the flank, but was quickly closed down so he crossed to
Karlheinz Förster who somehow managed to curl the ball wide. The home team will be cursing
Joe Reece for weeks; he finished off a great pass from the left, knocking it past the keeper without a problem 19 minutes in. It's anyone's game now! 1 - 1. Oh dear - the keeper's made a mess of that one. The crowd was very disappointed after he let
Orest Tokarz get the go-ahead goal with a speculative shot from the right after 21 minutes. 1 - 2. The teams went for the halftime break at 1 - 2. Possession of the ball was split evenly between the teams during the forty-five minutes.
With the clock showing 46 minutes, the fourth official held up the substitution board.
Phua Ming Xin looked to see that it was his number in red, so he made his way over to the sideline and swapped out for
Gústav Thoroddsen, though he would have liked to continue. Maybe it was because of his team's lead, or maybe it was due to the ease with which he broke down the left, but
夏 (Ha) 其材 (Qicai) was a bit too sure of his talents, so instead of taking the easy tap-in goal after 50 minutes, he went for the backheel, which he put woefully wide. With the scoreboard showing that 59 minutes had been played, Grilled nearly put themselves up another goal after
Gústav Thoroddsen came through on the left. Fortunately for the home crowd, the keeper made the save. With 60 minutes played,
Paulino Trindade nearly put the visitors up by one more as he broke through in the middle and fired from just outside the box, but his shot whizzed just over the bar. Big paper red cards were being held up by the opposing supporters with 62 minutes on the clock after
Brian 'Was Born' Reddy's mistimed tackle from behind. The referee only showed the Grilled player a yellow card though. As the 70 minute mark approached, the Grilled manager decided it was time for a substitution.
Orest Tokarz reluctantly made way for
Evandro La Face. After 85 minutes, the Opium coach wanted to see a new face on the field, waving
Erwin Demmelhuber off.
Pablo Escobar took his place. It was announced by the fourth official that he estimated stoppage time to be around 1 minutes. This meant there could still be an extra attack or two left in the match! The match ends 1 - 2. Well, look at this! Cardi B is on the Enormotron in naught but giant sunglasses and a Twisted Metal F.C. tank top. I've not seen anything like it before. Opium's top performer was clearly
Duarte 'Susi' Moreira. Even six year old fans were wincing at the poor play by
Pablo Escobar today. Grilled's best player was
Brian 'Was Born' Reddy. I can't remember
Dimitris Germanakos ever having a worse night than he just had.
