Saint Paul 0 - 1 Grilled
The 5007 spectators at
Saint Paul Cathedral were in for an afternoon of sunshine.
Marzio Calda was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Jérôme Marie and
José João Lemos. For some players the sunny weather was bad news. It made Powerful and Quick players a bit sluggish. For Technical players, it was instead an advantage, allowing them to shine on the pitch. The following players took the field for Saint Paul:
Bonmezzadri -
Marradi,
Malima,
Prantl,
Elieche,
Wynne -
Shuffler,
Boal,
Pettit,
Záviška,
Pierre -.
Grilled's lineup was:
Vadalà -
Webb,
Law,
Tran -
Carapaica,
Mazhud,
Chu Soon,
Thach,
Ze Han -
Velho,
Mangoye.
Saint Paul FC fielded a 5-5-0 lineup. For Grilled Birds, the formation of choice was 3-5-2. Grilled clearly preferred using their supernatural (14) ability to attack in the middle. Grilled's
Chad Thach was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent's quick free kick after 13 minutes. After 18 minutes, it looked like Saint Paul had an attack coming, but
Lau Chu Soon nipped all that in the bud with a powerful tackle. After 24 minutes, there was a bit of a mixup on the field as Saint Paul found themselves out of position and their organisation level dropped to passable (6). Grilled had a good opportunity to attack on the wing, but remembered their instructions to go for middle attacks. 34 minutes into the game, Saint Paul seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion and they fell to a weak (4) level of organisation. Central attacks were the recipe of the day for Grilled, as they moved the ball from the wings to the middle with startling regularity. Down the middle came
Chan Ze Han, making a fantastic play that nearly had Grilled take the lead after 35 minutes, but
Manuele Bonmezzadri preserved the tie. 36 minutes in, Saint Paul's
Giuseppe Marradi received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first.
Manuele Bonmezzadri was in no condition to play on. 38 minutes into the game he left the field on a stretcher, with his left thigh bandaged, and crying out in pain.
Andrei Ţig had already been warming up, and came on for
Manuele Bonmezzadri. 0 - 0 was the halftime score. Grilled had most of the ball, with 58 percent of possession.
During the break, Saint Paul's coach went through the team's tactics yet again, getting them up to passable (6) organisation. As the clock reached 46 minutes, Saint Paul decided to regroup.
Muhammad Wynne gave
Kesrick Shuffler a little pat on the back as they changed positions on the pitch. As the 46 minute mark approached, the Grilled coach decided it was time for a substitution.
Atang Mangoye reluctantly made way for
Prokop Mottl on the pitch. 77 minutes in, Saint Paul appeared unsure on how to play and their organisation was only inadequate (5). Grilled's
José Luiz Velho showed his experience after 78 minutes, as he expertly set himself up to take advantage of a rebound off the crossbar, but his shot was tipped harmlessly out of the way. 79 minutes into the game,
Andrew Pettit broke up a promising Grilled attack single-handedly, using just the right amount of physical pressure on the ball holder. 80 minutes into the game, Grilled wanted to bring some new energy to their game.
Dante Tran gave
悠太 (Yuta) 中北 (Nakakita) a quick hug as he left the field. 80 minutes into the match, the referee signalled for a Grilled substitution.
Yee Jian Hui came on for
Cameron Law.
Avelino Elieche of Saint Paul was booked for kicking the ball away after the whistle. Grilled players heard their coach's words ringing in their ears and steered their wing attacks to the middle instead. 83 minutes into the game,
Yee Jian Hui almost gave the visitors the lead, as he clipped a delicate lob over the keeper, but the ball glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. A mistake by the home side's central defence after 86 minutes allowed
Prokop Mottl to score for Grilled. The scoreboard now read 0 - 1. The referee announced 1 minute of stoppage time, giving fans a slim hope that their team could get one more attack in before this was all over. The match ends 0 - 1. Grilled claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 62 percent.
Saint Paul's top performer was clearly
Brandomil Boal. On the other hand,
Kesrick Shuffler's play was disheartening. Grilled's best player was
Chan Ze Han.
Lau Chu Soon turned in a dismal performance, however.
