Gümel United trundled out to the pitch in a 3-5-2 formation. The visitors, Grilled Birds, chose to start the game with a 2-5-3 lineup. Grilled had a good opportunity to score the go-ahead goal after a combination on the right but the home team's keeper
Levi Petitot saved
Chan Ze Han's shot that was headed straight to the top corner. United were able to mount several counter-attacks, such as the impressive one 14 minutes in, but
Hubert Kurtz lofted a free kick over the crossbar. Though it was beautiful soccer, the home crowd did not enjoy
Brian 'Was Born' Reddy's goal after a run down the left with 30 minutes on the clock. Grilled lead, 0 - 1. The visitors'
Mohd Marzuki Khairul took advantage of a mix-up between the home side's goalie and center backs 40 minutes into the match. 0 - 2 for Grilled. By working their way through the middle, United refused to be intimidated – their efforts finally led to
Udo Syed managing to slip the ball past the keeper to make the score 1 - 2. Grilled's
Chad Thach was shown a yellow card after 43 minutes for slicing down an opponent.
The teams went for the halftime break at 1 - 2. Looks like Nate Silver was right again - his prediction that Grilled would have 58 percent possession in this half was spot on!
46 minutes into the match, the referee signaled for a Grilled substitution.
Joe Reece came on for
Chan Ze Han.
Chan Ze Han was coming off, and had taken his last free kick for the day. That meant
Aw Keng Chuan got the chance to showcase his dead ball skills. After 55 minutes, Grilled's
Gandhik Chitre burst through the central defense and let loose a cannonball of a shot, scoring for 1 - 3. After 60 minutes, the United coach wanted to see a new face on the field, waving
Johnnie Brugnaro off.
Luigi Alessandro took his place. With the clock showing 65 minutes, the fourth official held up the substitution board.
Hubert Kraushofer looked to see that it was his number in red, so he made his way over to the sideline and swapped out for
Davide Etterlin, though he would have liked to continue. After the ball was lifted in from the left,
Gandhik Chitre was on his own in the home side's penalty area and should have scored after 68 minutes, but missed, probably due to lack of concentration. After 75 minutes, the excellent pass from the wing by Grilled's
Hwang Teck Fu reached
Lim An Keng's head, and he is not one to miss such an opportunity - 1 - 4.
Udo Syed upset his teammates somewhat when he nearly caused an own goal by acting negligently. The home crowd was not impressed when
Aw Keng Chuan came in from the right, shooting hard to score after 78 minutes. Grilled were now up 1 - 5.
Levi Petitot got a fingertip on
Chad Thach's shot from the left 80 minutes in, and managed to keep the visitors from going up another goal. The game had been going for 83 minutes when
Lim An Keng broke through on the right, upping the score to 1 - 6 for Grilled, much to the home crowd's dismay. 85 minutes into the game, Grilled wanted to bring some new energy to their game.
Brian 'Was Born' Reddy gave
Paulino Trindade a quick hug as he left the field. It was announced by the fourth official that he estimated stoppage time to be around 2 minutes. This meant there could still be an extra attack or two left in the match! The match ends 1 - 6. Well, look at this! Cardi B is on the Enormotron in naught but giant sunglasses and a Twisted Metal F.C. tank top. I've not seen anything like it before. United's best player was
Hubert Kurtz. You can tell it was nickel beer night yesterday at the local bar because
Levi Petitot seemed to stumble all over the pitch.
Lim An Keng performed admirably for Grilled. Good thing
Dimitris Germanakos isn't a horse, because he'd surely be sent to the glue factory after that performance.
