Grilled Birds' first clash with leading Clementi club Bukit Regency ended 6-0 in their favour, with Regency electing to try and limit the damage with their reserves. Slovakian fullback František Závodský would not debut despite reportedly passing his fitness test after transferring from Spain's UP Aviles for some S$2.1 million four days ago, with Danish midfielder Mark Bak likewise rested after coming on against Pearl Divers on Sunday. S$8.9 million Latvian wing star Elmārs Beresņevs was also a no-show for the eight-time Division Three champions, as Argentine skipper Fabián Gambina led a doomed rearguard action against a hungry Birds team.
This included, of course, Phua Ming Xin, who would spearhead a lesser-seen configuration that comprised Gandhik Chitre and Hwang Teck Fu as his support. Hwang in particular was a curious choice, but his creative sense was never in doubt, as he coolly allowed a pass to run across him in the fifth minute, taking Tang Cheng Kwang unawares as Phua duly supplied the finish. The 22 year-old Number Nine was very much in his element, and he had it 2-0 with his third cup goal of the campaign 21 minutes in, with fullback Willie Shi not managing to prevent the shot despite having tried to foul an advancing Federico Parada outside the box.

Parada's assist was not without its costs, though, as he fell heavily after knocking heads with Shi, and would have to go off with a suspected concussion. That had Egemen Dinçer Ferzan change up, as Bukit Regency held the Birds for the rest of the half through grim resolve. Grilled saw no reason to change their style of play just yet, but the continued brute-forcing through the middle saw few returns; Mohd Marzuki Khairul could have had the third in the 55th minute, but his excellent half-volley came back down off the bar, and was scrambled aside.

As so often happens with a heavy pressing setup, Regency would flag as the Birds moved them around with rapid passing, and Mo Seng Long barely escaped a dismissal after sliding full tilt into Lim An Keng with 55 minutes gone. Swiss referee Mario Hirzel was seriously considering the red, but his holding off was just as well with Grilled only getting into high gear. There would be no more chances after blatant holding on a corner in the 73rd, and Aw Keng Chuan crashed the penalty down the centre for 3-0.

Lim was next on the scoresheet as the Clementi braves started to crumble, and once again it came alongside some desperate last-ditch defending, with wingman Shiv Chowdhury going studs-up in his hurry to shut the Grilled man down. While no contact was made, this was very clearly a dangerous tackle, and Hirzel could only shake his head as he reached for his pocket once more, with Lim already wheeling away in celebration.

It was a tough game for a goalkeeper playing only his second senior match, but there would be no respite for 18 year-old Ganesan Mirikar, who had two more goals to concede. Mohd Marzuki Khairul was his usual cheeky self in picking Yeo Li Rong's pocket in the 80th as the youngster found himself with nowhere to turn in his own six-yard box, while Gandhik Chitre ran a sixth in right before Gústav Thoroddsen's five-minute cameo.
