Pride Of Syria
The Birds would miss out on the last sixty-four of the Trophy of Legends, as they suffered another defeat on the third and final day of the tournament. But before that, they kept their dreams alive by defeating Bolivian top division club R.C.R. FC by three goals to two, after falling behind to an excellent fifth minute counter from former PRC U-20 player Qu Yude.
Sølve Lunde's heading prowess would return with a big header past Pamir Aşkan in the 29th minute, and
Salah Kamel then gave Grilled the lead with a sally down the middle. R.C.R were fighting for their own qualification, and Yannik Preusche brought them back level, but it was
Vikram Mudaliar who avoided a draw that would have helped neither club.
That was one down for Grilled then, but next to face them would be Syria's latest double winners, lions on the grass. The Israeli-founded side were on their third successive Syrian League title, and their class showed as they tore into a befuddled Birds club, going three up before half-time. A half-fit
Chu Xin Lee couldn't add much from the left, despite it being an obvious sop towards shoring up possession by
Eren Serpin, and Doru Radu's slide home for 4-0 soon after half-time destroyed any remaining chances at an unlikely comeback.
Chan Ze Han and
Bilal Mohammad Harun gave Grilled a 2-0 win over Argentine II.4 runners-up Rencelj F.C. afterwards, but it was clear that the encounter with the Lions weighed heaviest on the players' minds. "383 out of over twenty-five thousand teams might sound decent - and we did finish first of all Singaporean participants, ahead of Fringeheads and St. Xavier's FC - but that loss was brutal." Chan remarked. "We were totally out of it there. We need to study the tapes deeply, when we get back."
Farmer Bunnies too lost once, as they ended 5910th and 6-0-4 overall. Italian Division Seven side Olympique Ronciglia exchanged early riffs with Ronald Charron answering
Lim Su Liang in the eleventh minute, but braces from
Xue Kangfang and
Ibrahim Zahran Al-Maashany ensued, as the not-very-sophisticated opponents were picked apart on the break. Much the same went for Belgian Division Five outfit FUMDP, who had to moreover overcome the indignity of an own goal by Per Friman after a comical mix-up, in a 0-6 defeat.
German sixth divisioners Caravaning Atlantik were another matter, though, with homegrown playmaker Bertie Wilucki making the most of both his opportunities in the first half.
Rashid Nasir al Din did have his moment with a great penalty save off Santiago Tamisa, and
Vishnu Tallapaka thumped a free-kick around Atlantik's defensive wall in the second half, but the Buns would end this one 1-2 down.
Grilled International's fine run would end on a lower note, as they lost two of their final three games, but a 7-0-3 finish in 1852nd place was perhaps rather higher than the most optimistic of their fans would have expected. Estonian Division Two luminaries Rafa Pallas were led by Swedish forward Dud Anthony to a 5-2 victory, as they pulled well clear in the second half.
It was then back closer to home, as Pahang side Belot lost 1-4 despite resorting to a physical game, that saw them cop five cards, one of them a second yellow for Maciej Kuzioła;
Chua Jun Long put International 2-1 up with four minutes to go, and he would add another in injury time, before
Tibor Atzenhain chipped in with what seemed a lost cause from the left side.
That set International up for a last showdown against Belgian III.8 representatives The Purple Goal !!!, but Eran Scarin was merciless as he punished International's undisciplinced defence with a hat-trick, in a 6-1 result.
Wang Chu Chi struck International's only goal in the 64th minute via a stunning volley, but they were already four goals adrift by then.
