Farmer Bunnies might have defeated Welsh Division Two club CandyAngels in exhibition games twice last season, but Grilled Birds would for once prove inferior to their Clementi affiliate, as they collapsed against them this day. Grilled could point to a terrible pitch, brought on by several consecutive days of rainstorms over Gwent, but this excuse surely rang slightly hollow even to themselves.
To put this in perspective, the Birds had recorded fifteen victories and a draw in their sixteen fixtures thus far this season, twelve of them competitive, and they had to be forgiven for feeling a bit invincible. The team that they put out wasn't hobbled by any means, though, with the possible exception of Manuel Vadalà standing in for the injured Massoud Dob in goal. Bilal Mohammad Harun might have looked slightly out of place on the left, but it was otherwise an XI that would have been entirely respectable in league or cup.

It was, however, also not going at all well for them here, as CandyAngels appeared entirely more used to the conditions; it might have been the grass or the air or something else, but the Birds looked like they were playing on an alien planet at times. Chan Ze Han, usually so imperious, could hardly managed to stand straight in the treacherous mud, in stark contrast to the stably-heeled opponents. Hugh Hallworth was more than content letting the ball do the work for him, and a barrage of crosses would soon lead to Robert Williams' majestic headed goal in the eighth minute.

The match got bogged down for a while after that, but while CandyAngels slowly regained their mojo, Grilled somehow never quite did. The Welsh team were definitely holding their lines well, and with the Birds attackers mostly tied up by the ground conditions, CandyAngels' usual defensive concerns were absent. Former Welsh international star Stevie Chester was in his element, and would be roundly celebrated as he legally bodied Bhavya Panigrahi, and then lumped it home in the 33rd minute. Chester could have repeated the trick two minutes later, but for Manuel Vadalà's reflexes.

The Italian goalkeeper's day was only about to become worse, however, as CandyAngels turned up the heat, leading to additional goals for Llwyd Morgan and then Terrell Mendoza before half-time. It was all Chan Ze Han could do to pull out that bit of right-footed magic on the turn, but the much-heralded Michael Rutland saw that curler coming all the way.

Grilled had never looked quite so deflated as they trooped off - muddied and defeated - these few months, and they never quite recovered, from the looks of it. The defenders were getting absolutely bullied by Chester, what with so little time to recover, and he would force Vadalà into an awkward tip-over barely four minutes after the restart. CandyAngels rode on, and Ieuan Lacey would make it 5-0 in the 68th minute from Robert Williams' exciting right-wing dribble, with Neeraj Muthyala moreover booked for clattering Williams after he had made the assist.

Facing total collapse, the Birds would finally rediscover themselves with about twenty minutes left, coincidentally as the pitch began to dry; their opponents were getting slightly casual too, and Iago Bufton wasn't overly bothered when Moey Xin Seng clipped a cross off him, and out for a corner. Perhaps he should have been, as Cyril Künzler's delivery flew straight to Kalle ter Berg, who saw no reason to break his scoring habit.

A double substitution followed, with Chu Xin Lee and Yuta Nakakita coming on for Panigrahi and a not fully match-fit seeming Neeraj Muthyala. This would bring yet another reducer from the restart, with Chu being entirely willing to take a bump or two getting a through ball to Moey, who didn't break stride in sliding it past Rutland.

Of course, a full comeback was probably too much to ask for, although there might have been serious concern had Ter Berg been again successful on a second corner, shortly after Terrell Mendoza's powerful free-kick went high. In the end, however, it was Chester who would reaffirm CandyAngels' triumph with a classy rounding of Vadalà, who would be fortunate that Hugh Hallworth blew his opportunity next.
