Spartanx Impasse
Fonseca Raises Flag

Grilled missed the injured Abdul bin Jantan badly as they got off to a shaky start against Spartanx United, who had the Birds chasing a draw for the majority of the SG Super Cup IV opener. Coach Niculae Stanca had emphasized the necessity of a good start if they were to get anywhere in it, but his players barely kept themselves in contention with unconvincing jitters at the back.
The match started smoothly enough; With bin Jantan recuperating at home, the 34 year-old Alex Fonseca was called upon to play two matches in quick succession, this time in a punishing midfield role. Despite never being meant as a key component, the Portuguese has proven himself an asset each time he has been called upon, and he picked out Zhu Changchun with an exquisite thirty-yard pass that his fellow midfielder only had to reach to score from in the eighth minute.

The Spartans appeared slightly vulnerable at this point, not having scored in their latest three league matches, and winger Barsaat Dharakar did little to help nerves when he kept his hand on Seytek Djekshenkulov's shirttails, and forced the referee to book him. They did have the consolation of playing against a rusty two-man defence of Lin Jungui and Walter Ross, though, with the latter only barely managing to close out Carlo Maurizio Zago's run at the last moment.

This was just a taste of what was to come, as the Birds went into another of their defensive hiccups. Ross had been coming under heavy pressure from Spartan's right side, particularly the transfer-listed local defender Will Newsome, who got behind Ross at will and must be an attractive proposition for most sides looking to add heft to their width. Newsome's final product left something to be desired, but few were surprised when José Jiménez met and cashed in on one of his many crosses in the 37th minute.

The Birds had not yet regrouped when they were hit yet again. Jungui brought down Jiménez in the box, and Grilled didn't quite bother to get numbers in the penalty area before Marlon Di Vito whacked the free-kick into a sea of blue and white. lu Zunwen had anticipated what was going to happen and tried to get close to Óscar Quintina, but was blocked off by Quintina's supporting cast as the centreback gleefully pumped it past Dexter Stacey.

There was some real bite going on as Zago clipped Zunwen rather unnecessarily later on, and it was good that half-time arrived when it did and allowed the respective team leader to defuse the situation. Grilled came out looking a far more composed side, and soon got a slightly lucky break when Fonseca fell over as he was about to get a shot off, only for a horrified Newsome who, unable to stop his own momentum, forced the ball into his own net. There was some deliberation before Fonseca was declared the scorer, and Newsome certainly wasn't protesting.

Fonseca, who had probably been Grilled's player of the match thus far, then had the opportunity to put the Birds in the lead with another adventurous dribble down the left, but one again his unschooled finishing let him down, allowing Dettore to gather the ball easily. Worse, Xing Zhongze then came in from the right to strike Spartanx's third in essentially unhampered.

The Spartans were looking good for a morale-boosting victory, with Grilled's forwards, especially Chow, showing strong signs of fatigue, but talismanic striker Mohd Safri bin Mohd Kassim would have nothing to do with failure. After Mohd Tuah bin Mohd Zain had given up a free-kick, Mohd Safri called for it to be taken immediately, and went about slicing straight through the defence to claw back a point.
