There was some wonderful news at the end of an indifferent campaign for Grilled favourite Mohd Safri bin Mohd Kassim, who received a call from the Hattrick Football Association of Singapore, informing him that he had been included in the 24-man national squad aged 22 years and 95 days. Singapore had recently done well to reach the third round of the Hattrick World Cup held in Trinidad & Tobago, where they were eliminated after narrow defeats to Liechtenstein and Serbia; the highlight was a very credible 1-1 draw against six-time world champions Sweden, thanks to a fearless header from Tele Fone FC's Muhd Anuar bin Senin, a player Mohd Safri has often been compared with. As of today, Mohd Safri is the youngest in a side consisting largely of other familiar faces from the national U-20 setup, such as Blackburn Rovers Fan's winger Poh Wai Ying, Robbie Football Club's Lei Chunzhuo and Heaven Skys' Mohd Rosedy bin Mohd Nor, not to mention league rivals in the same age-group such as Mohd...

The Birds held off a second-half resurgence by second-placed newbies are newbies to secure the crucial sixth spot, and they had their collection of blossoming forwards to thank for the massive derby victory. Former U-20 partners Mohd Safri bin Mohd Kassim and Chow Ying Lee both met expectations with well-taken strikes, but the limelight belonged to homegrown Tian Yonghang, who had a leg in both their goals. Up against a very solid opponent with championship aspirations, and needing nothing less than a win, Grilled bet their fate on a sharp counterattacking strategy and sacrificed Kyrgyz star Seytek Djekshenkulov for the additional defensive heft of Slavcho Tzonkov, who made his first appearance since the win against Arrogancae at rightback. newbies, who were bidding to reach the top flight for the first time in 31 seasons, concentrated their efforts on the wings, a known weakness of this Grilled team. They have yet to win a Division Two league, despite this being their twentieth...

Han, in charge of probably his last league game for Grilled, was pleased at how things turned out in the end. "I'm glad that we didn't have to rely on goal difference, which is always especially hard to take. The boys deserved this after all they had done and some of the luck that had gone against them, and Niculae should have no issues motivating them for next season." newbies' unexpected defeat meant that Shining Lights claimed both the title and a qualification match against Cup finalists Young Tigers, with an exciting 2-2 draw against Cup holders Arrogancae. This came despite their final haul of 26 points being four less than the 30 they got to finish as runners-up last season, a testament to just how competitive II.2 has become. In fact, the entire table remained unchanged, with CCP and Arrogance booking another run in II.2 by finishing third and fourth respectively. heimu XI passed up overtaking Arrogancae due to letting in a late goal, and will now meet Ang Mo Kio club Melivio...

The reserves were run over in a test run against former Ecuadorian Cup winners McLaren Mercedes, currently fifth in the Campeonato Ecuatoriano, despite staging an admirable rearguard action throughout much of the first half. Native midfielder Paúl Montero was the man of the match, as his predilection towards drifting wide right brought much headache to the Birds' backline. Standing out in their change strip of white with a vertical red-and-blue off-centered stripe, McLaren's cosmopolitan side set up for a counterattacking game, and Grilled could not help but bite on the bait. Montero made himself noticed in the eleventh minute when he suddenly switched tack and bulldozed a path through the middle, and only quick thinking by Hovaness Noubaryan kept his effort out. Grilled did have their moments, key among them Neo Da Teck nearly managing to pass the ball into goal after a kind bounce from a long hit upfield fooled the defence. All said, the visitors deserved to go into the lead, and...

Head coach Han Lik-Tsun's priorities were clear as he was conspicuously absent from The Cooking Pot for the friendly, instead being sighted at the newbies ground as he watched newbies' reserves beat Swiss opponents First Drunk Town Players, 4-2. While most of their starters were not on show, it was not a completely wasted trip, as Han took notes on former national midfielder Tan Ying Eng and versatile defender Mohd Sofi bin Nan, both who appeared lacking match fitness. This left his assistant Luis Alcántara to give the reserve side their scorecard, which reportedly read "Not Good Enough". Alcántara did find some bright spots, though, such as winger Aden Abu-Abdel's useful debut, and the burgeoning understanding between Bakhtiar and Awyong at the back. Alcántara also confirmed rumours that Grilled were looking at Pudgy Penguins' multitalented 17 year-old Paul Lam, who had been a defensive rock in their U-20 side, the Fledgling Penguinz. While the reborn Saraca Swashbucklers, who...

The Birds belatedly clambered into the modest safety of sixth place thanks to a hardscrabble draw away at Changi Genius, in a gritty affair where both participants knew very well what was at stake. They had hoped to hang on after the impressive Tian Yonghang found the net for the third straight outing, but the hosts would not be denied, and saved themselves with a well-worked equaliser through Portuguese star Élton Sangue. Going into kickoff, the calculations were as simple as could be - win, and be in a very good position going into the final game, or lose and go down. Both sets of players couldn't be faulted for having more on their minds than simply knocking a ball around, but ironically the few who could put all that behind them had a distinct advantage. Grilled were the more fired up at the beginning, and they did not deviate from their three-forward strategy, striving to keep Changi on the back foot. The home side indeed yielded the initiative, and could have regretted it...

Outgoing coach Han Lik-Tsun grasped at all the positives he could take from the draw, emphasizing that Grilled had their fate in their own hands. "Our goal difference is nine better than Batavia and twelve better than Changi, which means that a win against newbies will surely be enough." he intoned. "We were always going to have to do that anyhow." This might be far easier said than done, given that newbies made short work of Batavia Cavaliers - which Grilled certainly have no complaints against - in a convincing 4-2 victory despite never quite raising their game to the heights they are capable of. This made it three wins in their last four league matches, and on current evidence it is doubtful whether the Birds can surpress the free-scoring pair of Roshadi bin Che Rusli and Yang Hongxin. Not only that, newbies can very well win the title with victory at The Cooking Pot, as they are now level on points with Shining Lights, who were held by heimu XI. heimu XI have guaranteed at least...

A month after his world fell apart on not being able to find a club willing to take him on professionally, former Chicken Wings midfield prospect Liew Soon Ting has successfully moved to Swedish Division Five side Umedalens Idrottsförening on a free transfer, joining fellow hopefuls Raphael Anneser and Tristan Bernlef. Liew credited Grilled with opening the doors, having allowed him to train with the senior side, and even finding a place for him in four friendly matches, which might have helped him to catch the eye of roving scouts. "I have been told that Division Five in Sweden is probably equivalent to maybe Division Three here, so it's more than I had hoped for." Liew beamed. "I would not have made it had it not been for this second chance, and rest assured that I shall make the most of it!"...

The reserves learnt how to come good late on, scoring four without reply in the second half after a cracking first ended three-all against Kuwaiti Division Three visitors rubin_kazan. Defender Hilal Bakhtiar sounded the starting gong for the goalfest in the fourth minute, after he held off Turk Mansoor Al-Nasser on a rare foray and blasted hard past Hadad Turk. Bakhtiar would be on the receiving end of similarly physical play soon enough, and it came at the hands of large Swiss forward Domenico Rudig, who left him off balanced with a close-quarters tug before scooting off to score unopposed. rubin_kazan followed up by taking the lead for the first and only time, with winger Farook Haj-Kaleel winning out against Colby Awyong to nudge the ball home from an indirect free-kick. It didn't look good for the youngsters at this stage, with some of them looking flustered and simple passes going astray, and all looked to be falling apart when goalkeeper Hovaness Noubaryan, an oasis of calm in...

The 7-3 win brought the reserve side some gruff acknowledgement from assistant coach Luis Alcántara, who eagerly claimed that his new distance running regime had helped ensure the team's freshness in the second half. "Just think, if they have become so fit after only 10km a day, what would happen if I upped it to twenty? They would be running rings around the opponents in the final ten minutes!" Alcántara said happily. Li Boon Boon, who played a big part in the victory, wasn't totally convinced. "Actually, we haven't been out for the past few days, thanks to Chinese New Year and rain. I don't think I would have been able to walk, much less run, had this match followed one of those training sessions!"...
