The Birds kicked off the Plan 9 Cup with a credible three-all draw against former Pacific Premier winners cardiff tigers, whose redoubtable Turkish forward Kemal Organa thrice gave them the lead. The Birds answered briskly each time, however, and could well have edged it had they been more decisive in front of goal.
Seven seasons on from their historic national title, and after a return to the second division, the Tigers have only just plotted a return to the Premier, with new Croatian head coach Darko Toglja getting the best out of a tried-and-tested core of regulars. Rotating between a 5-3-2 and 4-4-2 has not quite worked out for them against Oceania's best just yet, but their latter system would nevertheless be flexible enough to cause Grilled a boatload of problems.

The Birds hoped to reprise the triple-prong attack that had enjoyed a renaissance in recent weeks, with Low Aik Jia adding more pace to the right, and the senior midfielders packed in the middle. They were further ably assisted by the Japanese-Singapore defensive duo of Yuki Irie and Yuta Nakakita, who cooperated well in maintaining an adventurous high line.

Slovenian leftback Primož Kancilja, who had provided so much of the Tigers' goal threat in the last month, would find himself occupied by the free-ranging Low, but he would get his own back with a crushing tackle in the 30th minute. The referee saw nothing wrong with that, and a race down the now wide-open left flank allowed Organa a simple tap-in past an advancing Valentin Batâr.

That only spurred Low to greater efforts, and Grilled's 30 year-old winger didn't shrink from going up against Kancilja despite the setback. Revenge would be his, as he left Kancilja on the seat of his pants a few minutes later, before mirroring his contribution with a neat cross for Gennady Dvorak to volley straight into the roof of the net.

The duo's possibly slightly-overboard celebrations only served to spice the game up even more, and a crackling exchange then ensued, in which both Liakos Telionis and Yuta Nakakita wasted excellent look-ins. The Tigers then had a close shout at a penalty when Telionis was scythed down mid-turn by Yuki Irie, but fortunately for Grilled, the referee regarded the foul as having taken place just outside the area.

The Aussies would go on to retake the lead, as Kemal Organa outclassed the Birds' defence before sliding the ball past Batâr to cap his smooth solo run, but Low Aik Jia was having none of that.

If Organa was by far Cardiff's best performer, Low was without peer in making things happen on Grilled's end, and he continued his torment of Kancilja, as a sudden pull of the foot got him beyond the floundering fullback; Rinor Isufi played the foil smartly, and bought enough space for Low to finish it off himself, though Hemmo Gerritse almost got to that one.

It was a cracking end to an increasingly-intriguing contest, and the drama wouldn't end with the half-time whistle, as Yuki found himself in an extended confrontation with Telionis. Cooler heads prevailed, fortunately, and they would make it into the tunnel unscathed.

The possession stats continued to favour Grilled strongly after the restart, and the Tigers had to weather several nervy moments, particularly from the wily Tian Yonghang. Gerritse's magic one-handed save on the hour gave his team heart, though, and it would be Organa who would put them ahead a third time six minutes later, dancing past Yuki Irie's hesitant marking.

With things beginning to go badly, Grilled's reaction was to introduce Mohammad Ramli Saliman in the hope of crafting more thoughtful attacks, all the more as Rinor Isufi showed signs of exhaustion. This seemed to work, and a long and patience sequence of passing led to Tian making a successful break for it in the 75th minute.

Level yet again, Grilled continued pursuing their first go-ahead goal, with the Tigers having spent most of their spark. They might have won it late through the always-vigilant Tian, who looped in a rare header getting on the end of Hariharan Prabhu's lift into the box. It ended up dropping onto the crossbar, to the Tigers' collective relief.

The final substitutions, which saw veterans Inge Nedregård and Zhao Jing Wei take to the pitch for their respective teams, saw little in the way of impact, and the draw was confirmed with Neeraj Muthyala's ambitious miss from over thirty yards.
