Hjortlind The New Hope

After over a week of trepidation, in which time Bakunin fielded a desperate 4-5-1 formation to wrest a draw from Bluedragon away, the new hope of the club has been unveiled. While everyone had expected Bakunin to bring in an experienced scorer, such as 24 year old Croat Bojan Banko, Mexico-based Tommy Josefsson or Scotsman Zeljko Milutinovic, he gave Grilled's fans yet another shock. Though Grilled had been linked closely with all three players, Bakunin was reported only to have made a serious bid for the latter's services, which turned out to be a losing battle with Czech Republic Division Two team FK ZLIN. With a barely acceptable four points from the opening three matches, three of them from a walkover, Grilled's fans are understandably anxious for their first true win, Bakunin said. "And Hjortlind's the one to look to.", he ended. For Bakunin had been looking far closer to home and taken Ulf Hjortlind, barely eighteen, to Grilled Birds from the Malaysian Liga Perdana.

Even with the one and a half million received from offloading Chai Yew-Hoe, Grilled Birds had to borrow to finance the monster S$2.66 million deal with badang_fc. Bakunin was aware that his future well hinges on this single signing, for the club can now afford none of any note till next season. He was at pains to point out that Hjortlind was relatively undervalued. "Players of his scoring standard generally go at $2.5 million, but he has good passing skills too. badang_fc themselves paid over that amount for him." Bakunin explained that he was looking to interspere some passing drills with the normal playmaking practices, so Ulf would improve too. "He has great pedigree," Bakunin went on. "After he came up from the youth academy from FC Owngoal early last season, he went to Swedish Division Four Murklan FC on a million dollar transfer where he ran riot in the few friendlies he played in. He was then bought by badang_fc and was a part of their successful national championship campaign, while still only seventeen. This season, he featured in their Cup matches against Darx, Selangor Gibbons and ewoodies, harvesting five goals against the Gibbons, and scored in all three competitive matches he took part in.

Even so, with only those games under his belt, and having never been exposed to an actual league pressure match, how will Hjortlind fare when he takes to the field against Geylang Eagles United this Sunday? "I haven't even said I would play him," Bakunin retorted with a gleam in his eye. "I could use the 4-5-1 again to neutralise their famed attack. They did take down former S-League side Neo Toxicants and the titanic midfield of FC GBR in succession with it. I am not afraid to play him if need be. This Sunday's game is the first true home league match of the season, first with Gamma Stadium newly expanded, and first by Grilled in Division Two. I want it to be a good christening." A hint for Hjortlind to be blooded too, perhaps.
